RunVermont’s Miles for a Missions program was created in 2009 to help local charities raise financial support through the People’s United Bank Vermont City Marathon and Relay. This program was designed to strengthen ties between the running community and Vermont charities.
Each year, RunVermont staff and an outside committee carefully review applications to the Miles for a Mission program. A diverse group of organizations is chosen, a large percentage of which have a local presence or provide services to the Vermont community. The awardees are selected with consideration to the impact the work of the organization and the thoughtful plan for the best use of the marathon and/or relay slots to raise awareness and support. A total of 50 2-person relay team and 50 3-5 person relay team slots among the 12 charities are awarded. There is currently no limit on the number of marathon slots.
Each charity is responsible for overseeing its own fundraising campaign; the total amount of money raised relates directly to the efforts of the charity. The organization is responsible for the registration fees of the slots, regardless of implementation. Following the event, all charities are responsible for submitting an event report to share the results of their fundraising efforts. This report is required before reapplying for the following year’s event.
Miles for a Mission official charities benefit by having guaranteed relay slots, thereby allowing them to bypass the lottery process. Every organization is featured in a RunVermont newsletter prior to the event. The People’s United Bank Vermont City Marathon and Relay online application has a drop-down menu allowing runners to choose to learn about, run for or donate to each of the charities.
The funds raised through the Miles for a Mission program will be used to support our summer program. There is never a charge for a child to attend any of our programs. The money will be used to help us continue our summer program and bring in new activities for the campers. Camp Ta-Kum-Ta tries to squeeze in as many life experiences and memories as possible into this magical week. Along with traditional camp activities such as swimming, athletics, ropes course, and arts & crafts, Ta-Kum-Ta offers once-in-a-lifetime opportunities such as rock climbing expeditions, hot-air balloon rides, formal dances, and lake cruises.
